Tapestry Dance Company: A Vision in Rhythm

The 13th annual Vancouver International Tap Festival is off and running, beginning with a performance on Gabriola Island (August 28th) and then into full swing in Vancouver August 31st through September 2nd. Organized by the Vancouver Tap Dance Society, this year’s festival is packed with shows and master classes for youth and adults.Among the featured artists this year is American soloist, choreographer and master teacher Acia Gray, co-founder of Tapestry Dance Company in Austin, Texas. Both Gray and her company are highlighted in this video. The company is set to perform their critically acclaimed touring production Souls of our Feet on August 31st. Along with technique classes, Gray will be addressing the success of Souls of our Feet by offering a “Tools of the Trade” workshop and a “Behind the Scenes” panel with Vancouver-based artist Derick Grant discussing the process of getting a show up and touring.Gray will also be featured as a female tap artist in the September 1st show Women in Tap, the second act on the evening’s program, following A Chronological Life Story of a Few Tap Dancers. According to the festival website, “this special performance features women who have so enriched and impacted tap dance with their legendary leadership and artistic talents.” The show includes Gray, Dianne Walker, Chloe Arnold, Jessie Sawyers, faculty of the Vancouver Tap Dance Society, Vancouver Tap Ensemble and more.Be sure to check out the October 2010 issue of The Dance Current print magazine for an item on tap dance in Canada.
