On November 12th and 13th at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Éonnagata takes the stage as the fruit of a collaboration between three outstanding artists: French contemporary ballerina Sylvie Guillem, Québécois theatrical visionary Robert Lepage and British choreographer (born in Ottawa) Russell Maliphant. Wrapping the work with vibrancy and texture are the stunning gender-bending costumes by the late high-fashion designer Alexander McQueen. The work is a production of Sadler’s Wells London and Lepage’s company Ex Machina.According to the presenter’s website: “Inspired by the audacious exploits of 18th century spy and transvestite, Le Chevalier d’Éon, this exciting new work draws from the backgrounds of the artists, as well as from the ancient Kabuki technique of Onnagata, in which male actors stylishly portray female roles.”
