Suddenly Dance Theatre: Guthrie Swims the Lake

By Julye Huggins
GUTHRIE SWIMS THE LAKE

Suddenly Dance Theatre, of Victoria, British Columbia, recently posted this video of its dance theatre short film Guthrie Swims the Lake (2009). Created by founding artistic co-directors David Ferguson (choreographer and performer) and Miles Davis (director, narrator and composer), this four-minute film is layered with text from Shakespeare and depicts Irish theatre director Sir Tyrone Guthrie (1900-1971) dancing in a lake as he pulls objects from Shakespeare’s theatre. According to the video’s YouTube notes, “this short film explores Guthrie’s enduring obsession with the Bard’s watery metaphors.”
