Krypto for Solo Cello

Last night at Tangente in Montréal, Solid State opened its second of two programs which, according the the presenter’s website, offer twenty contemporary creations by Helen Simard and JoDee Allen that, “propose unconventional mutations of urban street dancing and the emblematic gigue québécois.” Their first show, The Reunion ran September 30th through October 4th and the new show Breakdance for Solo Cello runs October 7th through 10th. The latter show will then head to the University of Lethbridge in Alberta on October 30th.Choreographers Allen and Simard (the company’s co-artistic directors) perform along with Jennifer Casimir, Joe Danny Aurlien and Greg Selinger accompanied by live cello and electronic remixes of Bach’s solo cello concertos. As noted on their website, this interesting blend “draws out the elements of beauty and fluidity that are not always seen beneath the explosive and athletic nature of breakdance vocabulary, while giving breath and new life to music that was composed hundreds of years ago.” This video offers a taste of their vision as Bboy Krypto (aka Greg Selinger) performs his solo at the 2009 Winnipeg Fringe Festival.
