North American Culture Show: Waterloo-Laurier Sweeping the Awards

By Julye Huggins

Videos from the North American Culture Show (NACS) 2012 were recently released on YouTube, highlighting the winners of the competition earlier this year. The three-day event February 17th through 19th was held in Niagara Falls, where 300 dancers from sixteen schools formed ten teams, creating a massive North American inter-university competition. This year’s NACS winners were York-Seneca in third place, Ottawa-Carleton in second place and Waterloo-Laurier sweeping the awards with first place overall, first place bollywood, first place hip hop and first place spirit.NACS was recently renamed from its earlier incarnation, South Asian Alliance Culture Show (SAACS). The competition not only recognizes dance skill, but also offers awards for artistic direction and spirit. The dance component requires teams to include classical, bhangra, bollywood and fusion, with forms such as hip hop. Points for artistic direction are given where teams thematically integrate props, sets, costumes and music. The spirit award is judged based on a short piece (involving students and other members of the community) describing the school’s spirit, as well as consistent cheering and support as audience members.
