This video is of The NDN Way by Brian Solomon with Mariana Medellin-Meinke in workshop. The work premiered last year and visits Vancouver for the Talking Stick Festival February 18-28.
The NDN Way draws inspiration from Cindy Bisaillon’s 1974 interview with teacher/philosopher Ron Evans (Métis) and her subsequent CBC Ideas documentary The Indian Way. It integrates elements of Cree philosophy into a collage of abstract imagery and movement, with a soundscape and visuals by Solomon. “Half of the work I do in my career is visual art,” says Solomon, who attended the Ontario arts high school Sudbury Secondary School before completing studies at the School of Toronto Dance Theatre in 2005. Solomon has since comleted a Master’s at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, UK. His work continues to be presented nationally and internationally, and The NDN Way will be at Fort York in Toronto this summer.
