The February 2011 issue of The Dance Current print magazine includes an article profiling a mother and daughter who are key players in establishing Chinese dance in British Columbia: “Lorita Leung & Jessica Jone: Passing the Fan.”“There are days when Jessica Jone must feel she is standing exactly at the point where East meets West. Stretching in her ancestral past are thousands of years of rich Chinese dance tradition, and beckoning her into the future are the infinite possibilities of a diverse, contemporary dance practice in the global art world.” By Mary Theresa Kelly, The Dance Current: Print, February 2011. Along with her responsibilities as principal of the Lorita Leung Dance Academy and artistic director of the Lorita Leung Dance Company, Jone is also co-founder of Moving Dragon Dance Company. Choreographing and performing with her husband Chengxin Wei, they present contemporary dance works that offer a cross-cultural fusion with Chinese sensibilities. This video of Triaspora highlights a multimedia performance that incorporates traditional Chinese instruments played by the Orchid Ensemble and a video projection by Jin Zhang (inspired by a fire that burned down Chinatown in Nanaimo). While there don’t appear to be any upcoming performances for Moving Dragon, the Lorita Leung Dance Company will be presenting a selection of Chinese classical and folk dances in the Discover Dance Series on February 24th at the Scotiabank Dance Centre in Vancouver.
