Menaka Thakkar Dance Company presents 'Sitayana'

Coming up May 31st through June 2nd, Menaka Thakkar Dance Company presents Sitayana at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. With direction and choreography by Thakkar, the cast includes twenty bharatanatyam dancers, with the lead role of Sita performed by Neena Jayarajan. The performance also features the musical score and poetry of Valmiki, the author of the original Sanskrit Ramayana. As described on the company’s website, “this work is a sensitive and respectful retelling of the Ramayana, but from Sita’s point of view, which, in fact, universalizes into a woman’s point of view - a woman, not only of our times but of all times.” The English narrative helps to bridge episodes and bring the story into a contemporary light. In a story laden with devotion and doubt, this portrayal of Sita raises interesting questions of modern women. The event also includes two additional presentations. The first is Prince Rama in the Wilderness (June 1-2), a children’s show based on the epic Hindu classic Ramayana, told through classical bharatanatyam dance. The second is the Ramayana Symposium (June 2) where Rasesh Thakkar, Menaka Thakkar and other guest speakers discuss the many representations of Sita, both in the Ramayana and through the ages.Be sure to check out the March 2002 issue of The Dance Current magazine for an item on Menaka Thakkar.
