Meet the Era is a short, powerful documentary that explores the meaning of Chicago footwork.
As a dance style, it began in the 1990s in Chicago. Footwork gave way to a style of music that can be tuned to each dancer’s precise steps. This found its way to clubs around the world, but few people know what it means to still be footworking in the “Windy City.”
The dance group The Era brings together Chicago’s best footworkers. They’re out to prove that this dance style is an art form, one that speaks to a very particular time, place and culture: their Chicago.
As a part of our series, Dance Criticism: Perceptions, challenges and the future, Grace Wells-Smith speaks to four Canadian dance critics about how dance criticism fits into the current fold.
