Last week, the Toronto-based collective MataDanZe celebrated its 5th anniversary of community outreach and arts activism. The six-member dance-theatre collective was founded in 2006 by Victoria Mata and Olivia Davies, and currently also includes Gricel Severino, Irma Villafuerte, Misset Parata and Corrie Sakaluk.Their work seeks to empower individuals to tell their own stories, giving particular attention to those of women. According to its website, MataDanZe seeks to “transform the stigmatized role of women.” Their approach to movement embraces modern dance, improvisation, drag king, theatre, salsa and Afro-Venezuelan techniques. The group has brought its performances and workshops to diverse cultural communities and working-class people in Canada, the United States, Venezuela and El Salvador.
