Mass Bolero

A Danced Tribute to Olympians Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean
Mass Bolero

British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the gold medal in ice dancing in the 1984 Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia (now Bosnia and Herzegovina). Thirty years later, their perfect score is still celebrated by the people of Nottingham, England, where Torvill and Dean trained for many years. Fiona Buffini, associate director for Nottingham Playhouse envisioned a recreation of Torvill and Dean’s winning skate to Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero.” She created Mass Bolero, a flashmob project that invited community groups to perform ten-second segments of Torvill and Dean’s skate (re-choreographed by Jeanefer Jean-Charles to be executed on land). The result is a seven-minute film showcasing the full routine and scoring from 1984. Torvill and Dean, in brightly coloured jackets, make cameos in the opening and closing scenes.
