The Reel of Eight Dance

Today at noon in Vancouver at The Dance Centre’s Discover Dance series, the Louis Riel Métis Dancers share some of our Canadian heritage’s lively jigs, reels and polkas, which come from blending of European and First Nations cultures. This video from December 2006 introduces The Reel of Eight, performed here by Brent Clark, Mario Cornejo, Robin Henry, Rio Hughes, Natasha Lutz, Kevin Murphy, Monica Tejbal and Marcus Joi De Vie.The group was formed in 2001 by Yvonne Chartrand, who is also the artistic director of Compaigni V’ni Dansi, a Vancouver-based dance group that fuses traditional Métis dance with contemporary arts. According to the company’s website, “the group has been dedicated to preservation and innovation, successfully sharing the culture and history of the Métis with both Aboriginal and mainstream audiences since its inception.”
