Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal: Léonce et Léna

Leonce & Lena

Running October 21st through November 6th, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal presents the North American premiere of Christian Spuck’s Léonce et Léna at Place des Arts. According to the company’s website, the work is based on a 1838 political satire by author Georg Büchner and tells of two miserable royal misfits seeking to escape “the self-serving, petty conventions of their respective tiny kingdoms.” Packed with comedy and irony, their tale reaches epic absurdity as they fall in love in an attempt to thwart their arranged marriage. Their contemporary approach to ballet and emphasized theatricality find a perfect fit in conveying a parody of the aristocracy.
