Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal

TooT By Julye Huggins

Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal have a great mixed program running March 14th through 23rd at Place des Arts in Montréal. Danz & Toot showcases a collage of excerpts from works by Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin including Moshe (1999), Virus (2001), Three (2005), Telophaza (2005) and Max (2007) and the complete work TooT (2005) by Dutch choreographer Didy Veldman.TooT, with its mobile circus-ring-type set and white-powdered faces, is a satirical look at an absurdly homogenized society. Noted further on the company’s website, “a small society of clownish characters see their conformism and gregariousness undermined by a thirst for the absolute, for freedom. […] The manipulative powers of media and corrupt leaders are depicted in dark comedic tones, and the childish and hilarious game will end in violent revolt.”Be sure to check out the May 2010 issue of The Dance Current print magazine for an article on Gradimir Pankov, artistic director of Les Grands.
