Kevin O'Day: Translating Hamlet to Dance

Starting June 1st and running through the 10th, the National Ballet of Canada presents the North American premiere of Hamlet by American choreographer Kevin O’Day (artistic director of Ballett Mannheim). In this video, O’Day discusses his adaptation of Shakespeare’s play into dance, which we see in rehearsal by performers Guillaume Côté, Piotr Stanczyk and Heather Ogden. On different nights, Côté and Stanczyk will play the challenging title role of Hamlet, as will Naoya Ebe. Ogden also shares her role as Ophelia with Sonia Rodriguez and Elena Lobsanova. According to the company’s website, the work is “a ballet of haunting eloquence, raw emotion and truly tragic impact. Adhering with astonishing fidelity to the original’s story, O’Day’s choreographic reconfiguration, which bridges classical and contemporary idioms with his own rough-edged, highly physical style, brims with narrative urgency and startling characterization.”Be sure to check out the September 2010 issue of The Dance Current print magazine for an item featuring Guillaume Côté and Heather Ogden.
