12 Listen by Karen Jamieson Dance at Heart of the City Festival 2010 in Vancouver

The November 2010 issue of The Dance Current print magazine includes a feature on site-specific dance: “Reconsidering Public Space: Dance in situ”. One of many artists included in the article is Karen Jamieson, artistic director of Vancouver’s Karen Jamieson Dance (KJD).”The streets [of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside] are the most appropriate performance venue for my community-engaged work … The work provides the opportunity for the participants to recognize their own community, space, ground and creative power. The work provides an opportunity for the audience to experience this also, by their presence in the same space, experiencing the same dance structure.” Karen Jamieson, The Dance Current: Print, November 2010. This video features a snippet from KJD’s recent collaboration with Carnegie Dance Troupe at the 7th Annual Heart of the City Festival last month. Listen, a street-dance, is part of an ongoing series of interdisciplinary dance creation workshops by KJD. Starting at the Carnegie Community Centre, the artists travelled as a procession down Hastings Street to Pigeon Park where they chanted, sang and moved for a gathering crowd.
