As part of the Bata Shoe Museum’s programming for the Planet IndigenUS celebrations in Toronto, on August 18th it presents three storytelling dances by aboriginal hoop dancer Crystal “Beany” John. Of Taino and Cree descent, “Beany” John hails from Kehewin, Alberta. She is both a teacher of hoop dance and an innovative performer, whose contemporary style incorporates elements of hip hop. She recently finished a tour with Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado and has performed at both the 2012 Billboard Music Awards and the 2012 MuchMusic Video Awards. Also noted on the presenter’s site, “she is a female Grassdancer, one of only two women in Canada given permission to be part of the Grass Dance Society.”
