The Dec/Jan 09/10 issue of The Dance Current print magazine includes an article about custom of mummering in Newfoundland. “Imagine a band of merrymakers knocking at your door, faces covered in pillowcases or stockings, lumpily dressed in layer upon layer of clothing, perhaps an accordion in hand, step dancing and singing, using strange voices and demanding to be let in,” said Kristin Harris Walsh, The Dance Current. It’s been just over a month since the Mummer’s Parade, in St. John’s, NF. The wrap up party dances on, celebrating a tradition with renewed vigor thanks to the launch of the first annual folklife Mummers Festival, organized by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland & Labrador.
