Happy Seventy-fifth RWB

By Jillian Groening
ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET

Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) has much to celebrate. In a short promotional video produced by Manitoba’s own Build Films, the RWB commemorates their seventy-fifth season in style. Striking black-and-white kaleidoscope footage of RWB soloist Amanda Green is juxtaposed against ghostly mirages from the company’s proud past, a reflection of how much the art form has morphed from its romantic roots to the raw athleticism of the present. Images of pioneering founders Betty Farrally and Gweneth Lloyd appear alongside the influential principal dancer-turned-artistic director Arnold Spohr, and the ethereal prima ballerina Evelyn Hart poses demurely while Green flicks into a series of clean fouettés and fluttering bourrées. Set to the dreamy rhythms of Dead Horse Beats, Winnipeg’s beloved ballet company honours their roots while propelling themselves toward a bright future.
