Gadfly Hiphop Choreography "Making a Scene"

The December 2010/January 2011 issue of The Dance Current print magazine includes an item highlighting a hot pair of Toronto-based street dance artists: “Ofilio and Apolonia: A High-Octane Partnership.”“In addition to living, teaching and breathing street dance, they are committed choreographers and community builders who believe that dance is dance and that pretty much all forms are interesting. Working individually, together and with an ad hoc group of talents that periodically come together as Gadfly, [Ofilio] Portillo and [Apolonia] Velasquez are integrating street dance within the established Toronto community…” By Kathleen Smith, The Dance Current: Print, December 2010/January 2011. This video features some of the duo’s choreography, performed by Velasquez, Simone Bell, Addy Chan, Lisa Auguste, Alix Kell, Katrina Potes and Kassandra Baird. Co-directing an array of styles in Gadfly, Portillo and Velasquez often find their work difficult to label. An excerpt of their upcoming multimedia production Klorofyl will premiere at Dance Ontario’s Dance Weekend from January 21st through 23rd. According to the company’s website, this fifteen-minute chapter features five of Gadfly’s dancers accompanied by original music of Canadian electronic-violinist Dr. Draw.
