Empirical Quotient

Quotient Empirique / Empirical Quotient (promo) - RUBBERBANDance GroupRUBBERBANDance

Since premiering at Montreal’s Place des Arts in 2013, RUBBERBANDance Group’s Empirical Quotient has criss-crossed Canada, the United States and Europe, with tour dates continuing into 2015. Since 2002, Victor Quijada, choreographer and founder of RUBBERBANDance Group, has been creating distinctive works that merge the juxtaposed worlds of urban and contemporary dance. Through his signature method using interpretation, decision-making, partnering and rhythmic variations, a hybrid style of movement is formed that is unique to RUBBERBANDance. Empirical Quotient is a predominantly abstract work that explores themes of self-perception and identity, and elaborates on the human instinct for gregariousness and group dynamics. Without an imposed narrative to guide the audience, six dancers with developed characters move through situations of dependence, rejection, empathy and acceptance. Composer Jasper Gahunia and lighting designer Yan Lee Chan, both longtime collaborators of Quijada’s, create an atmosphere that seamlessly ties the piece together.

Empirical Quotient’s next tour stop will be in Québec City May 21-23.
