Discover the Art of Pantsula

Melly Mel learns pantsula in Soweto, South Africa
STV PANTSULA DANCE PROMO

Melly Mel first got a taste for the African tap-and-glide style of dance known as pantsula when she performed in Cirque du Soleil’s The Beatles LOVE in Las Vegas. The dance originally emerged in the 1980s as an expression of dissent by young South African men and women who wanted a way out of the violence in the Townships.

In this video, we see Mel dancing pantsula with South Africa’s Not Guilty Crew. Together, they create a dance conversation with Mel sharing genres typical of American street culture, such as locking and popping, bboying and house.
