Cosmetic Green by Karey Shinn, Act 1

A couple of months back, April 24th through 28th, the runways of Fashion Art Toronto (FAT) were occasionally animated with dancers. Designer Karey Shinn presented Cosmetic Green, a show inspired by plants and insects in a chemically manicured garden. Further noted on her YouTube videos, “this work marks the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Rachel Carson’s epochal Silent Spring, the book which exposed the damage that pesticides inflict upon the biosphere, kick-starting the environmental movement.”Act one was choreographed by Leon Blackwood and features characterizations of roses, leaves, aphids and men by dancers Nikki Johnson, Esie Mensah, Sagine GG Semajuste, Jackie English, Dori Kwong, Zoë Shinn, Peter D’Sousa, Irvin Washington, Kaela Faloon, Kate Knox and Deona Scott. Check out the video below to see acts two and three featuring bugs, ants, bees, butterflies, dandelions, a dragonfly and pesticide men, with additional choreography by Shavar Blackwood, Emily Law and Olivia Davies.Act Two
