Compaigni V’ni Dansi

The Spirit of Métis Dance By Julye Huggins

Running March 2nd through 23rd, the Vancouver International Dance Festival presents an amazing program of artists from New Zealand, Switzerland, Denmark and Canada. On the roster is the Vancouver-based Compaigni V’ni Dansi, which offers free public performances on March 9th and 23rd.Lead by Artistic Director Yvonne Chartrand, the company blends traditional Métis dance with contemporary arts, sharing the lively spirit of mixed aboriginal and European heritage. Performing as the Louis Riel Métis Dancers, the group presents Daughters of the Country, an excerpt from the award-winning work The Crossing, a full-length co-creation by Chartrand, Maria Campbell and Ania Storoszscuk. The piece harkens back to a time of peace, a mere ten years before the rising resistance in Saskatchewan.
