Just around the corner, on November 13th and 14th, Danse Danse in Montréal presents Compagnie Flak at Place des Arts. The company performs José Navas’ Diptych, which is preceded by the world premiere of a short solo for Navas himself, Prélude à Diptych. The ensemble tackles Diptych in two parts, featuring the excerpts from Bach’s piano composition Well-tempered Clavier as well as his Suites for Unaccompanied Cello. According to the presenter’s website: “The first part is highly structured, densely written, precise and architectural, with the 10 dancers faithfully adhering to the musical structure. […] More fluid and cheerful and leaving room for improvisation, the second part invites the dancers to be fully involved with the music.” The harmony of the work is remarked as being a more classical approach than the company’s previous repertoire. The cast of ten dancers include Lindsey Renee Derry, Sarah Fregeau, Alexandre Jolicoeur, Benjamin Landsberg, Waldean Nelson, Erin Poole, François Richard, Lauren Semeschuk, Emilie Tremblay and Jeff Wolfe. Also coming up November 15th and 16th, Navas presents his new solo Personæ at Studio Navas. Noted on the company website, the work (intended for mature audiences) follows six characters through “Navas’ intensely personal meditations on desire and divinity.”Be sure to check out the November 2009 issue of The Dance Current print magazine for an article on José Navas.
