Compagnie Danse Nyata Nyata: Montréal by Night

By Julye Huggins

The January/February 2012 issue of The Dance Current print magazine includes an item about Zab Maboungou.”Zab Maboungou has always moved well in the world. The dancer, choreographer, artistic director of Zab Maboungou / Compagnie Nyata Nyata, and a teacher of philosophy at Collège Montmorency in Laval, is a self-described ‘child of colonization.’” By Philip Szporer, The Dance Current: Print, January/February 2012. On December 7th, Zab Maboungou’s Compagnie Danse Nyata Nyata presented Montréal by Night with dancers Julienne Doko, Karla Étienne, Marielle Mencé and George Stamos. The work plays with the gestural rhythms of the dancers as contrasting and distinct from that of the musical framework. According to the company’s website, the piece “reaffirms the principle of scenography integrated to the musical dimension and agitation on stage, melding articulations while remaining detached and ‘operating’ autonomously.”Also of note, Maboungou is the keynote speaker for the International Association of Blacks In Dance conference being held January 26th through 29th, 2012. The 24th annual event is hosted in Toronto this year by danceImmersion.
