Compañía Azul: Flamenco Made in Atlantic Canada

This Friday and Saturday (September 10th and 11th) in Halifax, Compañía Azul presents their debut full-length production Seven Curses. According to the company’s website, founding members dancer Megan “Azulita” Matheson, guitarist Bob Sutherby, singer Sean Harris and percussionist Tony Tucker (who all began their careers with Halifax’s El Viento Flamenco) strive, “to bring their own voice to flamenco, melding diverse backgrounds of various musical styles, while maintaining grounded in the flamenco traditions.” For this performance, they are joined by their new company dancer Sandra “Tziporah” Bornemann and guest artists, percussionists Daniel MacNeil and Ian MacMillan.This video features the founders of Compañía Azul performing as part of El Viento Flamenco in July 2009 at The Indian River Festival on Prince Edward Island.Be sure to check out the March 2009 issue of The Dance Current print magazine for a feature on flamenco in Canada.
