Friday and Saturday, the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad presents Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan. Renown for their spellbinding grace and physical fluidity, Cloud Gate performs Moon Water, which refers to the Buddhist proverb, “Flowers in a mirror and moon on the water are both illusory.” This meditative work, choreographed by their founding Artistic Director, Lin Hwai-Min, is described by the Cultural Olympiad as “an exploration of the Tai Chi Tao Yin movement, an ancient Chi Kung exercise, set to J.S. Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello.” Guided by Eastern philosophies of internal energy, the choreography meets a soaring Western accompaniment in a performance praised as sublime, metaphysical and otherworldly.
