Bring Your Own Beat: Coming to Vancouver

By Julye Huggins

Ill Skillz Productions is now expanding its hugely successful Bring Your Own Beat (BYOB) dance competition to Vancouver, and is now accepting competitor applications until December 1st.The annual dance competition series targets high school students and youth ages fourteen through twenty-four. The event challenges participating teams to create and rehearse a piece over a period of eight to twelve weeks. Those moving on to the next round have another creation period to ramp up for the finals, where a panel of choreographers judge for the top three winners. With a focus on at-risk youth, this program teaches team work, responsibility and the proactive thinking around planning and execution. The program also gives a healthy spin to the acronym BYOB, which is normally associated with drinking parties. This constructive rebranding as an educational dance competition promotes active and social alternatives to alcohol and drugs. The Toronto edition is currently underway, encompassing five divisions: Toronto East (schools east of Yonge Street), Toronto West (schools west of Yonge Street), Durham (schools in Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa and Whitby), Peel (schools in Brampton and Mississauga) and York (schools in Vaughn and Markham). The Toronto East division will be heading into their first round of the competition November 24th.
