Continuing this month (February 11th through March 4th), the Chutzpah! Festival 2012 in Vancouver is presenting works by its dance artists-in-residence: Barak Marshall with BODYTRAFFIC, Noam Gagnon, Noords Nederlandse Dans (NND), Azure Barton, Donald Sales and Cherice Barton, as well as Or Chadash, Or Atid and Shalom Dancers with Surrey India Arts Club. The works of Marshall and Gagnon are paired in a programme of Canadian premieres later this month, running February 23rd through 26th at the Norman & Annette Rothstein Theatre. This video highlights the final studio rehearsal of Marshall’s Monger, performed by the Los Angeles-based contemporary dance company BODYTRAFFIC and co-directed by the company’s founders Lillian Barbeito and Tina Finkelman Berkett.According to the company’s website, Marshall is among Israel’s most celebrated and innovative choreographers. For Monger, the narrative is inspired by the life and work of author/artist Bruno Shultz, Jean Genet’s play The Maids and Robert Altman’s film Gosford Park, among other sources. The work tells the “story of a group of servants trapped in the basement of the house of an abusive mistress” and “explores the dynamics of hierarchy, power, free will and the compromises one makes in order to survive.”
