Tomorrow and Friday, the UK’s DV8 Physical Theatre is at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, touring thereafter to Harbourfront Centre December 2nd to 5th. To Be Straight With You is another example of the company’s interdisciplinary approach to the performing arts, communicating their ideas in a blend of dance, theatre, text, documentary, animation and film. “DV8’s Artistic Director Lloyd Newson leads a multi-ethnic cast in a poetic but unflinching exploration of tolerance, intolerance, homophobia, religion and sexuality.” DV8 crosses boundaries in many respects, and pride themselves as risk takers both physically and aesthetically: “The focus of the creative approach is on reinvesting dance with meaning, particularly where this has been lost through formalised techniques. DV8’s work inherently questions the traditional aesthetics and forms which pervade both modern and classical dance, and attempts to push beyond the values they reflect to enable discussion of wider and more complex issues.”
