Ballet Kelowna: Romeo and Juliet Appassionata

By Julye Huggins

Closing its spring tour of A Grand Passion, Ballet Kelowna is performing April 27th and 28th in Kelowna as part of National Dance Week. The tour took them to Kamloops (February 12), Quesnel (February 26), Fort St. John (February 28), Fort McMurray (March 2-3), Athabasca (March 5), Morinville (March 9), Stettler (March 11), Revelstoke (March 14) and Summerland (April 14).According to the company’s website, the program honours ballet traditions of the nineteenth century, from “the sultry tango bars of Argentina, to the impassioned and tragic greatest love story of all time.” Works include David LaHay’s trio Allegro Per Tre, a classical pas de deux from The Sleeping Beauty, the passionate Tangazzo and Romeo and Juliet Appassionata. This last piece is LaHay’s 2010 creation, which “thrillingly condenses the tale of star-crossed young lovers whose passion for each other transcends familial rivalry and whose tragic end ultimately unites them forever.”For more on Ballet Kelowna, be sure to check out the February 2007 issue of The Dance Current print magazine.
