Aszure Barton: Busk

By Julye Huggins
ASZURE BARTON - CHOREOGRAPHER - BUSK

The Edmonton-born, New York-based artist Aszure Barton has been on a busy spring tour with her works Busk and Blue Soup, hitting Germany, Austria, Russia, United States and Canada. Having presented in Vancouver this March, she is now in Toronto on April 17th and 18th and then off to Kingston on the 19th and 20th.Busk seems to take us into a world of characters and impressions of busking, where the charm of entertaining is haunted with melancholy. The Dance Centre recently described it as representing her “signature style of precise whole-body expression inflected with an intense and intimate awareness of the thin line between humour and sadness.” Her dancers include Collin Baja, Eira Glover, Stephan Laks, Norbert L. De La Cruz III, Andrew Murdock, Emily Oldak, Marla Phelan, Banning Roberts and Kyle Robinson. For a profile on Barton, be sure to check out the November 2009 back issue of The Dance Current print magazine.
