This week, running March 3rd through 6th, Arabesque Dance Company & Orchestra presents NOOR (meaning “Light”) in Toronto. This world premiere is the creation of company directors Yasmina Ramzy and Bassam Bishara, highlighting the golden eras of Arab music and Egyptian dance. According to the company’s press release, the show brings together traditional art forms from Egypt, Lebanon, Syria and Spain, and “illuminates the rich cross-cultural influence of Arab art in medieval Andalusia expressed through ancient spiritual poetry, classical music and Bellydance.” Other dance styles in the fold include muwashshahaat, debke, shaabi and flamenco. The cast includes seventeen dance artists and fourteen musicians, including guest artists Fathi Aljarah, Kranti, Roger Scannura and Valeria Scannura. A much anticipated belly dance-meets-flamenco duet will fire up between Ramzy and Valeria Scannura, artistic director of Ritmo Flamenco.Be sure to check out the March 2009 issue of The Dance Current print magazine for an item on Yasmina Ramzy.
