Québec-based nouveau cirque company Cirque Éloize made its mark in New York, where its latest production, Cirkopolis, earned it the Drama Desk Award in the category of “Unique Theatrical Performance.”

President and Creative Director Jeannot Painchaud accepted the award on June 1 at The Town Hall. He co-directed Cirkopolis with Dave St-Pierre and was also responsible for the show’s artistic direction.

Cirkopolis features twelve acrobats and multidisciplinary artists fusing circus arts with dance. Music and theatre fight against the routine imposed by an industrialized metropolis and bring colour and individuality back into it.

The production was performed this past December at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. Cirkopolis has been on tour since 2012 with performances in Latin America, Australia and Europe coming up this the year.

The Drama Desk organization was founded in 1949 and has been granting awards since 1955 to outstanding theatrical productions that opened on Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway. Cirque Éloize’s past productions, Typo and Rain, were both nominated for Drama Desk Awards in 2005 and 2006, respectively.
