The School of Creative and Performing Arts is proud to present Professional Series: SPLIT SCREEN.

Professional Series 2014 is an amalgamation, a face-off, and a dual inspiration. Driven by a mutual desire to see a split evening between contemporary and jazz dance, Michèle Moss and Melanie Kloetzel started on a trek to uncover what was underneath, above, and within such a divide. What was laid bare was a dialogue that addressed rhythm, sensuality, humour, and boisterous physicality.

On one side of the split screen, Moss’ collaborators – dance artists, Deanne Walsh, Natasha Korney, Margarita Kozhevnikova, and musicians Raul Gomez Tabera and Robin Tufts – bring their onstage alchemy to the fore. Communicating a moody narrative using the dancing body, human voice and drum voices, they reveal “life, up to this moment!” The work features poetic suggestion from Dante and Maya Angelou, body-poetry, percussive voices, pulse and vibration, and lots of hip sway and swagger!

On the other side of the split screen, kloetzel&co. offers two bizarre readings of religion, history, sexuality, and art. The first of these efforts brings Melanie Kloetzel and Deanne Walsh together in TESTament, an ‘up-to-the-minute’ work that mashes up irreverent kitsch and physical prowess in a hilarious reading of Pussy Riot, nursery rhymes, and the Hail Mary.  Second, kloetzel&co. dancers make a dramatic historical trek to Canterbury in the premiere of Pilgrimage set to the contentious strains of Bartok.
