Prevailing Voices is a double-bill showcasing two solos: link by Aria Evans and Perdida by Lilia Leon. The evening will bring together two diverse artists who share an interest in exploring themes of identity and self-empowerment. link is a warrior dance about finding your own voice. The set, conceived in collaboration with award-winning designer Andy Moro, acts as a metaphor for time running out in a world loosing its resources. Focusing on the idea of forging ahead, Evans’ solo work asks the question “What is my generation fighting for or against?”. Perdida, meaning lost woman in Spanish, is based on Leon’s experience of feeling lost between cultures as a Mestizo-Mexican-Canadian woman of colour. The work integrates the language of dance with original text in Spanish, English and Náhuatl (Mexican Indigenous language), woven together with an original live score created by Brandon Valdivia. As the piece unfolds, Leon conjures and embodies three female archetypes representing her ancestry: a warrior woman, a goddess, and a ghost woman. Perdida showcases choreography and performance by Leon with direction by Anita La Selva, and text co-written by Lilia Leon and charles c. smith. Prevailing Voices will also feature a nightly Intermission DJ set with Classic Roots, Electronica / pow wow techno aficionado, and 2015 winner for the Best Pop CD at the Indigenous Music Awards.
