The National Ballet of Canada boasts an impressive repertoire of choreography. Their NAC program will feature works by George Balanchine, Sir Frederick Ashton, and Justin Peck. Apollo, one of Balanchine’s collaborations with composer Igor Stravinsky, is a performance of neo-classicism. Paz de la Jolla is a work by New York City Ballet dancer and resident choreographer Justin Peck and Ashton’s The Dream is a ballet based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Le Petit Prince is both a perfect and a problematic choice. Perfect because the story is already furnished with all the necessary components for a conventional ballet, and problematic because Le Petit Prince is actually a dark and confusing book.
Everybody has a story. If you take the time to ask questions and listen, you might even uncover a piece of dance history. Here is one such gem. Meet Shirley Sommerville.
