The past couple of years have not been easy for Ballet Kelowna. For financial reasons, the small company in B.C.’s Okanagan Valley nearly folded in 2013 and last year needed new leadership after founding artistic director David LaHay retired. Former Ballet BC principal dancer and choreographer Simone Orlando joined the company less than a year ago and rocky times now appear to be a thing of the past. This spring, the company will tour their new mixed program to Vancouver, Summerland, Princeton, Revelstoke, Kamloops, Banff, Penticton, Coquitlam, Creston and, of course, Kelowna. The program consists of new works by former Royal Winnipeg Ballet dancer Shawn Hounsell, Simone Orlando and famed Canadian choreographer James Kudelka. As well they will present Lee Dances, excerpts from award-winning works created for the Clifford E. Lee Choreography Award, including Creaturehood (1996) by Hounsell, Dedications (2009) by dancer-choreographer Heather Myers and Winter Journey (2006) by Orlando. On March 3rd, the company will also host The Ashley Bouder Project, treating Kelowna audiences to performances by New York City Ballet (NYCB) principal dancers Ashley Bouder and Amar Ramasar, alongside NYCB company artists Emily Kikta, Sebastian Villarini-Velez, Peter Walker and Indiana Woodward, and the Canadian premiere of Rouge et Noir, choreographed by Kelowna’s own Joshua Beamish, artistic director of MOVE: the company.
