Originally created in 1988 for the Nederlands Dans Theatre, Kaguyahime was choreographer Jirí Kylián’s first full-scale narrative ballet. Now restaged and distilled to its very essence, Kaguyahime, or Princess Kaguya, tells the 10th-century Japanese folk tale of the moon princess and her rivalling suitors. Set to a score by Japanese composer Maki Ishii, Kaguyahime is a valuable addition to the repertoire of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal by a master of European neoclassical dance.
A recent revival and North American premiere of Jirí Kylián’s Kaguyahime, Princess of the Moon by Montreal’s Les Grands Ballets.
Principal dancer and resident choreographer with The National Ballet of Canada, composer, creator and, again this summer, artistic director of the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur – an inspired meeting point of Canadian and international dance and music – Guillaume Côté describes himself as neurotic about dance.
