Direct from Taipei, Performing Taiwan presents a magical evening of refreshing contemporary puppet theatre and enthralling modern dance.

The Little Child - An artful, refreshing play of contemporary puppet theater, directed by Derrick Wei, that explores the magic and tragedy of everyday life. A brilliant example of Taipei’s new generation of artists, experimenting with form and physical performance.

Lament of the Exile - A banished scholar from ancient times pens a poignant song for today’s self-imposed exiles. A thrilling reinterpretation of Qu Yuan’s ancient epic poem, Li Sao, written after his own banishment 2,000 years ago. Dancers move to create dynamic tension. A Mongolian singer chants to a provocative modern score. In this enthralling performance, the different fates and emotions of wanderers separated from their homeland – zeal, melancholy, loneliness, exuberance – are laid bare.  Acclaimed choreographer Xiao-Xiong Zhang blends dance, literature, photography and installation to illustrate how contemporary intellectuals relocate identity after leaving home, and to explore the cultural ambiguity arising for those cut adrift in a world of disappearing boundaries.
