Sampradaya Dance Creations comes together with Punjab Community Health Services and SAWITRI Theatre to present Dispelling Darkness - A Work-in-Progress Showing. The project is a two-year, multidisciplinary initiative working to eliminate sexual violence and harassment in South Asian communities. Through the Dispelling Darkness initiative, women survivors work closely with professional artists and sexual violence experts to engage South Asian communities in meaningful dialogue through varied forms of visual and performance art. “We intend to build messaging through this work that will shift perspectives, remove stigma and eliminate sexual violence and harassment in homes, work places and social settings. Through storytelling, music, dance, and movement, four brave women have taken on this artistic journey with us to create a narrative based on their struggles.”
Rockstar bharatanatyam dancer Parshwanath Upadhye performed in an evening of contemporary bharatanatyam, presented by Sampradayada Dance Creations. Upadhye’s interpretation of a devotee’s adoration of Shiva, more specifically at the famous Chidambaram temple, was both athletic and graceful. His high kicks, leaps and knee turns did not come at the cost of nuances such as beautifully articulated mudras or clarity of movement in his adavus.
Mississauga-based artist Colleen Snell is known for her highly theatrical and site-specific dance work, and her newest creation, Creature, will be no exception.
