For New Works’ first Dance Allsorts of the 2017/2018, South Asian Arts will be showcasing South Asian dance and live music, including special guest performers. Narrated throughout by SAA Executive Director, Gurp Sian, the performances will take you on a dance and music journey, providing cultural insight into a rich and diverse culture. There will be a free workshop after the performance, focused on Bhangra dance. Bhangra dance is an upbeat, energetic and aerobic dance form that is traditionally performed to the hard-hitting, heart-pounding beats of the Dhol drum. It originates from the Northern state of Punjab in India. In this workshop, you will learn some of the basics movements and technique of Bhangra, along with a bit of the history associated with the dance form as well. By the end, you will walk away with a short Bhangra dance routine that you can perform anywhere!
