The inaugural Body Percussion Festival will take place March 28th, 2014, at Harbourfront Centre, as part of the 2013/14 NextSteps series. The first of its kind in Canada, the festival will feature dance, voice and movement arts that create music and rhythm through the body, footwear, and instruments that act as extensions of the body. Artistic Director Viv Moore has sought out artists with an unprejudiced spirit that embraces amateur, community-based and professional arts like. The result is a program of three nights and two days of performances and workshops at the Studio Theatre and the Brigantine.

The festival will feature international artists such as English step and clog dancer Kerry Fletcher (U.K.); hambone artist SlapJazzDanny, and body percussion duo Evie Ladin and Keith Terry (U.S.); and the Quebec-based gumboot ensemble Bourask. These artists, treasured by the communities that know them, will also share their virtuosic talents through workshops for artists and amateurs alike. The festival has also commissioned original works from Toronto-based flamenco dancer Carmen Romero and tap dancer Allison Toffan. Other local artists will be presenting new creations inspired by the mandate of the festival, or remounting classics from their repertoire in a fresh context: Alejandro Céspedes and Darren Drouin (step and finger-snapping), Esmeralda Enrique (flamenco), Sharada K. Eswar and Rup Singh (South Indian vocal music and beatbox duet), Jason Hachey a.k.a. MouthPEACE (beatbox), Tova Kardonne’s vocal ensemble GREX, Mafa Makhubalo (gumboot), Joanna de Souza’s Chhandam Dance Company (kathak), Bageshree Vaze (kathak), and Green Barn Morris.
