In Chinese Taoist philosophy, there are five elements: metal, wood, water, fire and earth. They form the basis of Taoist metaphysical understanding and are used in a variety of fields to seek harmony and balance. For its newest work, Little Pear Garden Dance Company, led by artistic director Emily Cheung, has invited five dance artists with different dance backgrounds to each explore their choreographic voices through an investigation based around one of the elements. The results combine the artist’s own perspectives and personality with their assigned element: fire for Sze-Yang Ade-Lam, wood for Emily Law, metal for Tia Lu, earth for Natasha Poon Woo and water for Cindy Yip, with additional writing by Stephen Siu. This blurring of cultural lines, using different artistic genres to consider traditional Chinese themes, here with the addition of young choreographic perspectives, has been a strength for Cheung and Little Pear Garden.

The 5 Elements is a performance highlight in the November/December issue of The Dance Current.
