Miya Shaffer is a Toronto-based dancer, performer and writer. She began training in ballet and modern dance with the Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre (CCDT) before joining the company from 2008-2012. Miya holds a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University where she studied English Literature and World Cinema Studies. At McGill, Miya became the artistic director of Inertia Modern Dance Collective, a student-run group of contemporary dancers working to connect student performers with the larger Montréal dance community. 

Miya was an intern with The Dance Current  from June 2016 to August 2017.

The Jam at the Toronto International Tap Dance Festival

Co-produced by Toffan Rhythm Projects and the Harbourfront Centre, the inaugural year of the Toronto International Tap Dance Festival featured performances, workshops, panel discussions and an all-are-welcome improvisational dance jam. As the final performance of the festival, The Jam provided a platform for dancers of all ages and levels to perform.

Developing and Showcasing Dance in Ontario

Two recent events in Toronto allowed the Ontario dance community to come together to support and mentor the next generation of dancers while also showcasing the diversity of the current dance scene in the province.

Of the dance I saw, both A Study on Effort and a performance by Yes Yes Y’all demonstrated a sense of adventure while keeping to Luminato’s larger, and founding, vision.
