Kathleen Smith is a Toronto-based filmmaker, producer and writer with a special interest in movement and performance. Kathleen was editor of The Dance Current from July 2011 through April 2014.

Dancing Between Boundaries at SummerWorks By Kathleen Smith SummerWorks Performance Festival

Dance and dancers were all over this August’s two-week SummerWorks Festival in Toronto – yet they weren’t only dancing. Within the festival framework, the sensibilities of these artists, their respective positions concerning tradition, technology, engagement and cross-disciplinary collaboration, became highlighted in a provocative and energetic way.


After Turbulence, Dance Victoria Producer Stephen White Reinstated

Longtime artistic producer at Dance Victoria (DV) in British Columbia, Stephen White, has returned to the position less than two months after being fired. White was reinstated following a Dance Victoria Society special general meeting on August 1 that also saw DV’s entire board of directors replaced. Within days of the meeting, DV’s executive director of two years, Jason Dubois, announced that he had left the organization.

Trajal Harrell By Kathleen Smith

Based in New York City, Trajal Harrell is much in demand internationally for his conceptually challenging dance propositions. Currently, his company is touring several iterations of the eight-part series Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at the Judson Church. Harrell and four dancers will bring the Antigone Sr. (L) version to Usine C in Montréal for the Festival TransAmériques on May 30th and 31st and June 1st and 2nd.
