While anticipating a new decade of growth and possibilities, the dance community came to an unprecedented halt in March 2020. But under COVID-19 restrictions, an even greater emergence impacts the emotional well-being, spirits, safety and livelihoods of Black people: Anti-Black racism.
Posted July 9, 2020This year in Canada, the conversation about diversity, inclusion and representation has been omnipresent. I’m profoundly happy that more presenters, curators and jurors have brought these words into their vocabulary. But I question what they’re really referring to. Do we all really feel and understand the urgency? More precisely, when asking, “What does the word diversity really mean?” the answers from the dance milieu are often incomplete, reflecting a lack of comprehension of the issues at stake.

Posted February 6, 2017Natasha Sheehan and Angelo Greco, both of the San Francisco Ballet, won the twelfth international Erik Bruhn Prize, the Prix de la danse de Montréal went to Édouard Lock, Daina Ashbee, Sophie Corriveau and Gilles Savary, Atlantic Ballet Theatre was named a 2016 Champion of Cultural Diversity by the New Brunswick Multicultural Council, Travis Lim of Vancouver won two gold medals at the 2016 International Dance Organization (IDO) Hip Hop Championships, Paul Tanguay won the National Arts Centre’s 2016 Award for Distinguished Contribution to Touring, Vivine Scarlett and Tess Vosper won Dance Ontario Awards, France Geoffroy of Corpuscule Danse won the Prix À part entière and Ontario Contact presented Dreamwalker Dance of Toronto with their 2016 Artist of the Year Award.
