Mama, do we die when we sleep? Explores Wonder in a World of Responsibility

Part of the Dancing on the Edge Festival in Vancouver, Rachel Meyer’s work was inspired by the question posed by her two-year-old daughter By Rachel Silver Maddock

Vancouver’s Dancing on the Edge Festival 2021 kicked off with a welcome return to live performance on the West Coast. Mama, do we die when we sleep? by Rachel Meyer was not the only sold-out show on the program, but it did sell out remarkably fast, even when extra tickets were added last-minute.

Memorable Moments, Methods and Mediums

Celebrating Canadian Dance in 2016 By Emma Kerson

Is there a work or a collection of Canadian dance works that stand out as highlights to you from 2016? Are there any themes or ways of working that stand out to you as interesting or unique? We asked this question to dancers and dance enthusiasts from around the country and this was their reply.

Dancer's Kitchen

Alex's Maple Quinoa

Dancers need meals that are clean, easy to digest and provide enough calories to keep them energized. This maple quinoa, from Alex Tam of Aeriosa Dance Society, an aerial dance company based in Vancouver, is a power meal with the flavour of maple and bitter chocolate. Vegan, highly alkaline and magnesium rich, it can be enjoyed before or after a high intensity workout, even one eighty feet in the air.

the edges of things are ill defined

After a mentorship of Berlin-based dramaturge Gabi Beier and a residency at The Dance Centre, Vancouver-based choreographer Julianne Chapple premieres a duet at this year’s Dancing on the Edge Festival of Contemporary Dance.

Dancing on the Edge 2015: Part 2

MOVE: the company and Wen Wei Community Dancers By Pia Lo

Dancing on the Edge (DOTE) has been a mainstay of the Vancouver dance scene for the past twenty-seven years, presenting outstanding work of professional artists from Vancouver and elsewhere while giving an equal platform to emerging artists. For many, their premiere at DOTE is often in collaboration with established professionals that may lead to return appearances in subsequent years. The opportunity to witness an individual artist’s progression over multiple performances, year over year, is another rewarding quality of this festival.
