A Cosmic Kind of Minimalism

Dreamwalker Dance Company’s Dual Light and a call to criticality By Molly Johnson

When introducing her new work, Andrea Nann is direct and affecting and serves to recast the stage as an “outer space” – a place between celestial bodies and also human ones. The work is part of DanceWorks 40th anniversary season.

Balanced on the Edge of Humour and Gravity

Throwdown Collective presents Various Concert and Ylem (3 Eggs Ago) By Kathleen Smith Ylem (3 Eggs Ago) / Various Concert

Throwdown Collective finds stability between measured movement and the absurd in a double bill featuring the works Various Concert and Ylem (3 Eggs Ago).

The Inertia of a Heavy Heart

DA Hoskins By Emma Doran Jackie Burroughs is Dead (and what are you going to do about it?)

Heavy-hearted, but not without curiosity, Hoskins’ choreography in this work is captive to gravity, and the dancers (purposefully) crumple under its inertia.

Sporting Life

Julia Sasso remounts her 1996 work examining society’s love of violence.

Paratopian View

By Kathleen Smith Paratopia

Choreographer and singer Bageshree Vaze first studied classical Indian dance while growing up in St. John’s, Nfld. She has named her recent DanceWorks program of new and remounted works Paratopia. Also the name of the new group dance that closes the evening, the word can mean both “displacement” and “alternate reality”. Collectively, the works on the program acknowledge the ever-evolving nature of Indian dance forms – and of life itself, which has carried Vaze to a new home in Toronto.

Cause and Affect

adelheid dance productions’ Elsewhere By Bridget Cauthery elsewhere

Elsewhere, Strauss explains in her program note, is a response to the notion of affect or affect theory. A concept that has been circulating in philosophical spheres since the seventeenth century, affect has become something of a catchphrase within social studies and visual culture in the last twenty-five years.
